On Friday, Mac and Monz needed to bring in the closer for the week, so Moose and Maggie’s Mystery Guest presented by Jersey Mike’s saw the producers calling for “The Duke” to start the 1 p.m. hour.
Moose was flying solo on Friday, and stole Maggie’s question asking the guest’s most famous cell phone contact (David Wright). The guest then said his favorite food is lobster, is “not really” a former athlete but a broadcaster “these days,” and occasionally works in New York. But, when Moose was told the guest worked for SNY, he incorrectly guessed Gary Apple, and time ran out before the Mystery Guest, who worked with Moose on Baseball Night in New York, identified himself as…
Yes, it was Duke, the former Mets executive among other things, who joined former TV pal Moose and immediately jumped into his thoughts on the COVID-19 situation in Major League Baseball.
“It’s pretty dire. A lot of teams have been impacted. We’ve lost almost 30 games now that have been postponed to some degree – the Yankees were flexible and able to go to Baltimore, or else it could’ve been more,” Duquette said. “We’ve gotten some good news out of Philly but aren’t out of the woods, and there’s still a lot of concern to see a potential outbreak for a second team.”
So then, Duke, with all this going on, and the report that Commissioner Rob Manfred fears the season may not reach its planned conclusion at some point, what is that point where a shutdown is necessary?
“I think that’s the big unknown. When we had this with the Marlins, this many players…I’d have thought we’d have seen a couple more teams go through this, and maybe eight or 10 players with a couple teams,” Duquette said. “I wonder if they’d pause the season for a widespread outbreak. It’s just so hard to know, because they’ve held that close to the vest. But I think if you saw another couple of teams have an outbreak like the Marlins, I don’t think they’d have much of a choice.”
