The New York Yankees are officially heading to the expanded MLB Postseason!
Although the Red Sox snapped the Yankees’ 10-game winning streak (and record-tying 12-game streak against them) with a 10-2 win early Sunday afternoon, the Mariners’ extra-innings loss to San Diego later in the day clinched a playoff berth for the Yankees, as their 31 wins is officially enough to be one of the top 8 teams in the AL.
The Yankees could still, fall anywhere within the eight seeds in the AL; they are 3.5 games behind the Rays, the current AL top seed, in the East, and could still overtake them – a feat that would require some help from their cross-town rival Mets, who welcome the Rays in for three games at Citi Field this week.
However, the Yankees are also only four games ahead of the third-place Blue Jays with four games against them in Buffalo coming up this week, and are just a half-game as of Sunday night behind the Twins for the fourth seed. so they still have a lot to play for in the season’s final week.
