Can’t touch an umpire in MLB, but they never said nothin’ about drilling one.
Not on purpose, obviously, but that’s just what happened in the seventh inning of the Yankees’ win over the Blue Jays on Wednesday. On a 3-2 pitch to Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Gerrit Cole went high when Kyle Higashioka was thinking low; Gurriel swung through it, Higgy missed it, and plate umpire John Tumpane ended up taking a 99 MPH heater right to the face mask.
An uneasy scene to watch, and you can hear Tumpane yelp as the ball strikes him. The ump stayed down for a bit, but thankfully, he was cleared to remain in the game and appeared to be okay.
And, Cole later apologized to Tumpane about the cross-up.
