In the first preseason game of the 2019 schedule, the Buffalo Bills captured a 24-16 win over the Indianapolis Colts on Thursday night at New Era Field.
In the first quarter, Buffalo's starting defense forced a punt on the first series of the game. However, Buffalo could not get much going on their first drive either. Buffalo did let Josh Allen throw it on every play of the opening series, 2-for-5 for 17 yards in their opening drive. Following a Colts three-and-out, Allen led the Bills offense down the field with big plays to Zay Jones and John Brown, but Buffalo fizzled out in the red zone and Stephen Hauschka ended up missing a 34-yard field goal, keeping the game scoreless. Allen's day was over after that second drive, finishing 6-of-11 for 66 yards.
The Bills could not escape injury news in the first quarter, as receiver Zay Jones was evaluated by trainers and taken to the locker room after a hit to the head. However, Jones was able to return to the sideline after being looked at in the locker room. Jones led the Bills starters with 31 yards on two catches.
In the second quarter, the Bills would strike first on the scoreboard, courtesy of backup quarterback Matt Barkley connecting with receiver Cam Phillips for an eight-yard touchdown pass to make it 7-0. Buffalo's focus was on getting rookie running back Devin Singletary some touches after the starters were finished. Singletary was solid in the first half with his opportunities, gaining 27 yards on nine carries while adding three catches for 21 yards.
The Colts defense wound up with the first turnover, after recovering a fumble on a high snap from Bills center Russell Bodine, but a fourth down stop from the Bills defense negated any potential damage from the turnover. However, Buffalo had a second fumble in the first half, as T.J. Yeldon coughed up the ball at the Colts' 19-yard line, with Buffalo poised to enter the red zone.
Buffalo's defense was once again up to the task though, with an interception from Bills safety Dean Marlowe to set up the Bills at the Indianapolis 20-yard line. The drive ended with a one-yard touchdown dive from running back Senorice Perry to make it a 14-0 lead with the first half ending. However, the Colts marched down the field with a minute left to get a field goal to cut the Bills' lead to 14-3 to end the first half.
UB Bulls product Tyree Jackson took over at quarterback to start the second half for the Bills offense, but the first NFL action for Jackson did not treat him well, going just 2-of-10 for 45 yards. Meanwhile, Chad Kelly, the nephew of former Bills quarterback Jim Kelly, took over in the third quarter at quarterback for the Colts. After the teams traded field goals, it was Kelly's legs that helped get the Colts to within four points, as his 33-yard touchdown run cut the Bills lead to 17-13.
The very next offensive play saw Bills running back Christian Wade, a rugby star brought in by the Bills this offseason, take his first preseason carry to the house with an impressive 65-yard touchdown run to make it a 24-13 Bills lead. Buffalo's defense let up a field goal, as Indianapolis cut the lead to 24-16. That would be the final score, as the Bills ran out the clock in order to secure the win in the preseason opener to start the preseason with a 1-0 record.
