Jessica Pegula tasted victory for the first time in her WTA career as she won the women’s singles title in the 2019 Citi Open in Washington, D.C. The daughter of Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres owners Kim and Terry Pegula defeated Camila Giorgi in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.

Coming in to the final, Pegula was ranked 79th in the world, but was able to upset the 62nd ranked Giorgi.

While this seems like an upset on face value, Pegula had experience against Giorgi before Sunday’s final. Pegula had a 2-1 head-to-head record against Giorgi coming into the final.

Pegula’s win at the 2019 Citi Open was the culmination of a long road to recovery after undergoing surgery on the labrum of her right hip in January 2017.

Pegula will head to Cincinnati, Ohio to partake in the Western and Southern Open, which starts on August 12.
