The second phase of the draft lottery will take place at the NHL Network studios in Secaucus, New Jersey.

It was a surprising outcome in Phase 1 of the draft lottery on June 26 when one of the eight "placeholder" teams, who will lose in the Stanley Cup Qualifying Round of the league's 24-team Return To Play format, won the lottery and ended up with the first overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft. Those eight teams in Phase 2 will have an even 12.5% chance each to win the No. 1 pick and have the chance to draft the consensus top player in this year's draft class, Alexis Lafrenière.

The "placeholder team" that won the first overall pick, "Team E", had a 2.5% chance to win the draft lottery.

The only team that has been eliminated to this point in the qualifying round is the New York Rangers after being swept by the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Los Angeles Kings ended up moving up three spots in the 2020 NHL Draft order after they won the second overall pick in Phase 1 of the draft lottery. The third overall pick in the draft lottery went to the Ottawa Senators, who won the pick with the San Jose Sharks' first round selection that was acquired as part of the Erik Karlsson trade during the 2018 offseason.

The team that ended up losing the most in the draft lottery was the Detroit Red Wings, who had the best odds to win the No. 1 overall pick at 18.5%. However, they ended up falling out of the top-three picks and will select fourth overall.

Here is how the draft order will look for the top-eight picks in the 2020 NHL Draft:

  1. To be determined
  2. Los Angeles Kings
  3. Ottawa Senators (from the San Jose Sharks)
  4. Detroit Red Wings
  5. Ottawa Senators
  6. Anaheim Ducks
  7. New Jersey Devils
  8. Buffalo Sabres

The draft order between picks No. 9 and 15 will also be determined by Phase 2 of the NHL Draft Lottery. After the one team is picked for the first overall pick, the rest of the draft order will be determined based on regular season points percentage.

The rest of the draft order from picks No. 16 through 31 will be determined based on the outcome of the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
