The legend of Rex Ryan continues to grow.

The former Jets head coach never seemed to lack a dull moment during his tenure in New York, and that’s just from the stuff we knew about.

Former Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis recently shared an anecdote about Ryan during an episode of Bleacher Report’s “Untold Stories.”

Revis began telling the story of a Monday Night Football game in 2010 when the Jets got embarrassed by the New England Patriots, 45-3.

The cornerback said the following day at practice Ryan was trying to go over film with the team when he suddenly got fired up and told everyone to meet him outside.

The team followed Ryan onto the practice field where somebody had dug up a ditch.

“He stops in front of the ditch saying his speech: ‘We got embarrassed. I know you guys are better than this … we can do better as a coaching staff,’” Revis said of Ryan. “Another assistant coach handed him the ball. This was the game ball. He was like, ‘I’m gonna tell you guys right now, this will never happen again.’ He’s like, chanting with the ball and waving it back and forth.

“He’s like, ‘We’re going to bury this ball right here, as a coaching staff, as a team.’ He buries the ball and the guy’s over there putting the dirt on it.”

Revis said he and the rest of the team were more perplexed than anything else.

“We’re just sitting there looking like, ‘Did he just really bury the ball?’” Revis said. “I’ve never seen this before.”

However, Revis said it seemed to work.

The Jets, of course, defeated the Patriots in the AFC Divisional Round 28-21 at Gilette Stadium later that year – which birthed another memorable Jets moment when Bart Scott told Sal Paolantonio “can’t wait.”

“I think at that moment, it could have made or broke our season,” Revis said of the regular season loss and ball-burying act. “We could’ve went into a slump. That was Rex’s touch and it worked.”

As for the ball, Revis said someone in Jets management is going to have to dig it up to see if it is still there.
