BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (WTIC) - The FBI is investigating allegations that employees at the Bridgeport Public Facilities Department sold scrap metal on the side.

An anonymous letter to the City Council last fall accused the Department of keeping a secret petty cash fund with money from sales of scrap metal to a Bridgeport firm.

Public Facilities Director John Ricci told Hearst Connecticut Media the account totaled around $5,500, and was used to boost staff morale with things like birthday cakes, meals, and event tickets. The newspaper, however, has obtained documents showing more than $35,000 dollars in transactions.

Police Chief Armando Perez told Hearst he called in the FBI at the request of Mayor Joe Ganim.
