HARTFORD, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - Suspended in March because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Connecticut's tax on single-use plastic shopping bags is coming back.
The suspension ends Tuesday and the 10-cent fee returns July 1, state officials said Friday.
The fee, intended to encourage shoppers to use reusable bags, was suspended because of public health concerns, but the Department of Public Health says the latest information shows reusable bags are not "a significant source of infection for COVID-19."
However, officials are still encouraging consumers to clean their reusable bags.
Before it was suspended, the tax was an underperformer for the state budget-- bringing in less revenue than projected.
