HARTFORD, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - Hartford police will begin using the public address systems on their patrol vehicles to promote social distancing.

When officers encounter people who are too close together, they will play prerecorded messages in English and Spanish, reminding people to stay farther apart to stop the spread of the coronavirus, city officials announced Tuesday. Health experts suggest a distance of at least six feet.

The department is also expanding its Teleserve unit, which takes criminal complaints over the phone and will be handling a wider spectrum of calls of service in order to protect both the public and officers from unnecessary in-person contact, officials said.
