HARTFORD, Conn. (WTIC) - Effective today, parking meter rates in the heart of downtown Hartford are increasing from $1.00 to $2.00 per hour.

According to an announcement from the Hartford Parking Authority, on-street metered parking rates in the central downtown area of Hartford will increase from $1.00 to $2.00 per hour.

The affected area, called the Downtown Central Zone, is comprised of 16 streets with a total of 480 on-street parking spaces. The Zone encompasses Ann Uccello Street to Prospect Street in the east, and Church Street to Wells Street in the south.

The new rates are effective today, Monday August 5th. HPA said it has updated all Woonerf app and kiosk signs in the zone.

In a press release, HPA said its goals are to promote on-street parking availability, and reduce traffic congestion in the downtown area, caused by double parking and vehicles circling to find on-street spaces.

The parking rate on streets surrounding the Downtown Central Zone will remain at $1.00 per hour, allowing those who want to take advantage of the lower rate structure to continue to do so.
