PENNFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WWJ) - Police officers shot and killed a man who shot and injured his two sons during an apparent domestic dispute near Battle Creek overnight.

The incident unfolded around 4 a.m. Saturday at a home on Kimball Avenue in Pennfield Township.

Officials say a woman ran away from the home and called 911 after her husband threatened to kill her and shot at her with a handgun.

Meantime, the couple's sons went after their 46-year-old father and attempted to get the gun. During the altercation, the 22-year-old was shot in the stomach and the 18-year-old was shot in the arm.

Officers responded, entered the home and found the man barricaded in a bedroom. At some point, he fired upon the officers. All three officers returned fire, striking and killing the man.

Both sons were taken to the hospital for treatment and last reported in stable condition. The woman was not injured.

The officers also weren't injured. They have been placed on administrative leave while the incident remains under investigation by Michigan State Police.
