(WWJ) Massive liquidation events are planned this weekend at select former Art Van Furniture stores in metro Detroit.
Planned Furniture Promotions, which is handling the sale, is advertising price cuts of up to 75% on remaining furniture, including leather sofas, leather recliners, casual and formal dining sets, mattresses of all sizes, bedroom sets, youth furniture, office furniture, entertainment centers, bunk beds, and more. There will also be area rugs available at discounts up to 65%.
"What happened was Art Van, when they filed bankruptcy, they started a sale that was very, very brief — and then of course it was interrupted by the managed shutdowns, and so I don't even believe it ran for more than two weeks," said PFP's Tom Liddell. "There's a tremendous amount of inventory that we have to sell off. The discounts are going to be significant."
The sale is creating some temporary jobs, too.
"One of the beautiful things about this is we've been able to bring back a lot of the former Art Van employees that were unemployed and give them the opportunity to assist with this sale," Liddell added. "So that's really great for the community and great for those employees."
Art Van Furniture started by the late Art Van Elslander in 1959 as a single store on Gratiot Avenue and grew to the number one furniture and mattress retailer in the Midwest with more than 200 stores. The company was purchased by a public equity firm in 2017, and in March of this year it was announced that Art Van was shutting down operations.
