Harper Woods man charged in hit-and-run death of worker on I-94

(WWJ) A Harper Woods man is facing felony charges in the hit-and-run death of a Macomb County roads worker.

Martin Dwayne Smith, 51, was arraigned in 40th District Court in St. Clair Shores late Friday morning on one count of failure to stop at the scene of an accident, and one count o failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in death.

Zach Morisette of Chesterfield Twp. was hit by a truck and killed on Monday while patching the pavement on the shoulder of I-94, near 9 Mile Rd.

Smith, who turned himself in to police two days after the crash, was ordered held on a $10,000 or 10% bond.

He is due back in court in two weeks.

Morisette, a 26-year-old cancer survivor, was only on the job with the Macomb County Department of Roads for about six months at the time of his death.

Visitation was being held Friday afternoon at the Lee-Ellena funeral home in Macomb Township. A service for family and friends is scheduled for Saturday morning at St. Mary Queen of Creation Catholic Church in New Baltimore.
