Michigan DNR Closes State Park Campgrounds, Shelters

LANSING (WWJ) - Don't unpack your camping gear just yet, unless you want to set up a tent in your backyard.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is closing all state park campgrounds, overnight lodging facilities and shelters through at least April 13.

The DNR says anyone with reservations over the next three weeks will receive full refunds, including the fee paid at the time reservations were made. Reservation holders will receive email notifications once cancellations are processed. Refunds will be applied to the original payment method.

State parks, recreation areas, boat launches and other state-managed resources remain open, with proper social distancing required -- at least 6 feet between yourself and another person -- in all areas of the parks.

The temporary closure comes after Gov. Gretchen Whitmer issued a "Stay Home, Stay Safe" executive order directing most businesses in the state to temporarily suspend in-person operations.
