State Police: Road Worker Killed In Hit-And-Run On I-94

(WWJ) A road worker has been killed by a hit-and-run driver in a construction zone on eastbound I-94 in St. Clair Shores.

The crash happened Monday afternoon near 9 Mile Rd., shutting down the eastbound freeway for a few hours at Vernier/8 Mile Rd.

According to Michigan State Police, the driver who hit the road worker, who was next to an orange road service truck on the right shoulder at the time, did not stop at the scene. 

There is no description of the vehicle involved at this time, as police search for the wanted driver. 

While the name of the worker has not been released, police said the victim is a 26-year-old man from Chesterfield Township. 

Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel confimed that the man was an employee with the Macomb County Department of Roads.

"Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones of this individual," Hackel said. "The County is committed to working with the Michigan State Police to determine how this tragedy happened.”

The freeway reopened to traffic at around 6:30 p.m.
