(WWJ) -- Two United Auto Workers members have died after contracting COVID-19.

UAW President Rory Gamble made the announcement in a letter to members Tuesday night, according to multiple reports.

Both workers apparently worked for Fiat Chrysler -- one at the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant and one at the transmission plant in Kokomo, Indiana.

Fiat Chrysler officials are declining comment out of what they say is a respect for the workers' family.

Auto plants across the state are shutting down, while some plants in the U.S. are preparing to manufacture respirators and ventilators as health officials continue to try to contain the virus.

The news comes as the total number of cases in Michigan approached 1,800 on Tuesday. State and county health officials have reported 26 deaths across the state amid the coronavirus pandemic.
