(WWJ) Authorities are continuing to investigate after two boats went up in flames and sank at a Lake St. Clair marina.
The Macomb County Sheriff's Office on Wednesday released deputy body-worn camera video of the incident Tuesday night in the Michigan Harbor, north of 9 Mile Rd. along on Jefferson Ave., in St. Clair Shores.
MCSO Maurine deputies responded at 8:15 p.m. to reports of a boat on fire at Ken’s Gas Dock. According to investigators, the 26’ Bayliner, found adrift and in flames, and was believed to have just left Ken’s gas dock when there was a lond explosion.
The two male occupants jumped into the water, swam to shore and fled on foot, officials said.
The vessel was burning when it drifted into a larger, unoccupied boat that was moored to the end of the dock directly east of Ken’s, which then also caught fire.
"There was four loud booms," said Denise, who was on her boat nearby. "And the big boat that burned had two or three motors."
The fires were extinguished by the St. Clair Shores Fire Department and the Macomb County Sheriff’s patrol boats, and no injuries were reported.
Both boats ultimately sank, the sheriff's office said, and several other oats in the area were damaged from the heat.
Investigators believe the two men on the first boat had just gassed up at Ken's before the explosion. While the pair remails at large, officials stopped short of calling them suspects in the case.
Reports say the second boat to catch fire belonged to Detroit Tigers great Kirk Gibson, although that detail has not been confirmed by authorities.
The cause of the explosion is unknown, as the investigation continues.
