Detroit PAL -- the Police Athletic League -- is asking metro Detroiters to step up to the plate today.
WWJ 950 is among Entercom Detroit's radio stations hosting a radiothon from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. to benefit PAL and its important work to improve the lives of youth.
From 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. we'll be highlighting special prizes for donors every hour and bringing you stories about the great work PAL does in the community. The first 25 people to donate $1,000 will receive dirt from the pitcher's mound at the old Tigers Stadium, courtesy of the Detroit Tigers. Tune in for more special donor gifts every hour.
PAL is celebrating its 51st Anniversary of serving young people in Detroit and this year is one of the most important ever! Our kids can’t afford for you to sit on the sidelines while the next generation of our city is being shaped, they need you to “Step Up To The Plate”! Right now, kids need you more than ever. Introducing the “Step Up To The Plate Radiothon, an Entercom Detroit collaborative initiative supporting Detroit PAL. Get in the Game. Because Detroit’s Future is in Play.
– The children and families of Detroit, whose residents are 80% African American, have been disproportionately devastated by COVID-19. In addition to the health and economic toll this pandemic is wreaking on lower-income and at-risk Michiganders, thousands of Detroit children are losing an essential lifeline: Detroit PAL;
– In 2019, nearly 14,000 boys and girls participated in PAL after-school and summer programs. But the virus and resulting quarantine have forced the temporary suspension of most of PAL sports and life-skills services. In order to survive this moment of crisis, PAL is tightening its belt, cutting staff and programming, while remaining staff have taken pay cuts;
– The organization will face a significant shortage of funding in 2021. To provide even a reduced number of 10,000 children with recreation and mentoring opportunities in 2021, PAL needs the community’s immediate support;
– Detroit PAL is seeking financial contributions in order to keep the essential work that the Detroit Police Athletic League operating, as it has been for over 50 years
Key levels for giving:
$250 serves one PAL participant for an entire year
$1,000 allows PAL to serve 10 PAL participants
$100,000 allows 400 kids to participate in PAL
