What's Still Open In Metro Detroit During Coronvirus Pandemic: Online Car Sales, Restaurants

(WWJ) Many businesses have temporarily closed their doors for business as the coronavirus pandemic rages on, but there are still scores of grocery stores, pharmacies, gas stations and restaurants still open across metro Detroit. Local car dealerships are open for online sales.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer issued an executive "stay home, stay safe" order that requires all Michiganders to stay put, except for necessities like health care, food and essential business. That order is in place until May 15.

Here's a look at what's still open during these unprecedented times:

-- Most grocery stores and supermarkets remain open -- including Meijer, Walmart, Sam's Club, Target, Kroger, Aldi and Costco -- while shortening store hours and offering special early morning hours for seniors and those most susceptible to the virus. Many stores are taking extra measures to keep customers and employees safe, like installing plexiglass shields in checkout lanes.

-- Car dealerships are open for online sales including LaLonde Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Imlay City, Mercedes Benz of Bloomfield Hills, Serra Chevrolet of Southfield, Shuman Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, Summit Place KIA in Auburn Hills and Clinton Twp, Szott Automotive Group is open for online sales and delivery of vehicles. Feldman Automotive is open for online sales in Lansing, Livonia, Waterford, Highland, Woodhaven, New Haven, Novi and New Hudson, Taylor Ford is open for sales by appointment only or online anytime. Jack Demmer Ford in Wayne and Jack Demmer Lincoln in Dearborn are offering online sales new/preowned. Emergency service by appointment. Delivery of new car by appointment. Jack Demmer Lincoln in Dearborn. Bill Brown Ford in Livonia is offering saonline sales new/preowned vehicles. Emergency service by appointment. Delivery of new car by appointment. Varsity Lincoln Novi is the same as Brown. 

-- Other daily essentials like gas stations, pharmacies, local grocery stores, hardware and pet stores also remain open.

-- Restaurants are allowed to remain open, offering only delivery and carryout options. Here are some of the restaurants that are still up and running during the pandemic:

  • BJ's Restaurants in Livonia, Taylor and Sterling Heights
  • Tubby's sub shops
  • Mission BBQ in Troy is open 11 am -8 pm Sunday - Saturday for take out, curb side and deliveries. Call 248-340-3860. "We pride ourselves at taking care of our customers including police, fire, first responders, and military." Check them out at missionbbq.com.

  • 112 Pizzeria Bistro in Rochester Hills; Carry out and free delivery
  • Jimmy John's
  • Smoothie King
  • The Owner of Bella Piata, Nino Cutraro, who also owns all the Wahlburgers locations, is opening Bella Piata in Birmingham for carry out, Tu-Sa from 4-8pm. Details here.

  • Buddy's Pizza -- all 16 locations offering free delivery through DoorDash.

  • Shield's Pizza is open 7 days a week for curb side delivery and take out.  Full menu, including beer and wine delivered.  Door Dash & Grub Hub available for delivery.  
  • A Matter of Taste in Commerce is open with carry-out options in the restaurant as well as curbside pickup! They offer full prepared meals along with desserts such as cakes tarts brownies etc
  • Many downtown Royal Oak restaurants including Jolly Pumpkin, Ale Mary's, Inn Season, Lily's Seafood, Mesa, Condado, and Freshii are offering Door Dash or Uber Eats delivery plus curbside pick-up.  
  • Karl's Kabin, with rustic American comfort food, is open in Plymouth. They're offering a three-course dinner scratch made for daily pick up. Pick-up is daily between 4-6 p.m. It's best to order a day in advance.
  • Amore da Roma, (formerly Roma Cafe), has re-opened for carryout!  place your order by calling 313-831-5940 or check out their revised menu on their Facebook page.  https://www.facebook.com/AmoredaRoma/

Hundreds more restaurants are open across the metro Detroit area and can be found at detroitfoodupdates.com. Most fast food chains, including the likes of McDonald's, Taco Bell, Burger King, Arby's and dozens of others, are still open for drive-thru and curbside orders.

Customers can get food delivered from many restaurants by using DoorDash.

-- The governor on April 24 loosened some of the stay-home restrictions, allowing some other types of businesses — including lanscaping, gardening center, bike rapair and golf courses -- to resume operations under certain conditions. Call before you go to check, and ask about curbside pickup and other safe options when applicable.
