The New Orleans Police Department says a bicyclist died in a fatal traffic accident with a NOPD police vehicle.
Police say it happened around 9:45 p.m. Thursday on General DeGaulle Drive in Algiers. A police report says Officer Derrick Williams was driving eastbound on General DeGaulle Drive, when a 54-year-old man riding his bicycle northbound on Westbend Parkway came into the officer’s lane and was struck.
The bicyclist was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. The officer was not injured.
The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office will release the man’s identify and determine the cause of death after an autopsy and the family is notified.
The NOPD says as per their department policy, a drug/alcohol test was administered to Officer Williams and there were NO signs of impairment. Officer Williams was off-duty at the time of the incident the police department says.
Williams has been reassigned pending the outcome of the investigation.
