Carboni says for reasons unknown, the 14-year-old crashed into the gate. Pushing it into the girls.
"One of the girls was driving the ATV and the second girl was standing beside it."
The sergeant says the girl sitting on the ATV suffered only minor injuries.
"The second girl sustained critical injuries and was brought by medical personnel to a local hospital. She was then airlifted to a Southshore hospital, where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries," Carboni said.
This happened Monday around 4:00pm in the area of Teal Road near Pearl River.
