The New Orleans Fire Department is investigating a two-alarm fire at an abandoned school building. The fire happened late-morning at the former Moton Elementary School at Abundance Street and Press Court in the Desire neighborhood.
"Upon arrival smoke was already permeating the neighborhood," fire officials said in a statement. "Firefighters had to force entry onto the property by cutting the locks off the gates and into the building by removing door coverings put up to keep out trespassers."
Once the firefighters got inside, they found a large fire on the first floor that had extended up to the second floor. Firefighters got the fire under control at 12:15 p.m.
"The cause of this suspicious fire is currently being investigated," the department noted. "The building had no working utilities and firefighters found evidence of vagrants throughout the former school building."
No injuries were reported.
