An early morning fire raced through a Veterans Boulevard office building Monday. The blaze broke out at 2337 Veterans just after 5am and quickly went to two alarms within 45-minutes.
Veterans Boulevard remains closed and between Illinois and Kansas avenues.
The building, a former motel, is located behind a Boost Mobile retail store. According to Kenner Fire Chief Terrence Morris, speaking with WWL-TV, says 10 fire crews fought the flames.
Morris says fire was extending through the roof of the structure. Firefighter attempts to get at the flames by cutting into the roof were hampered by heavy timbers holding up the structure.
Firefighters then went into defensive mode, setting up water cannons to keep the flames from spreading to other structures.
As two female business owners were being interviewed, they expressed concerns about a pet cat and bird in their business.
Seemingly on cue, a firefighter walked from the background holding the big white cat who was unharmed. He also said their bird was OK.
