The Jefferson Parish Federation of Teachers wants to push back the August 12 start date for schools in Jefferson Parish, because they are concerned it is not safe to return to the classroom.
Some teachers will protest at school headquarters today.
Jefferson parish has seen a recent surge in COVID-19 cases as well as across the state.
In a letter to the Jefferson Parish School Board, the teacher’s union said many families opted out of in-person learning and that in-person learning should not happen unless four conditions are met:
• A significant decrease in cases statewide and more specifically, in Jefferson Parish.
• There has been a continuous decline in new cases for a period of at least fourteen days.
• The Department of Health has certified that every Jefferson Parish Public School worksite exceeds the minimum requirements as set forth by BESE.
• The Department of Environmental Quality has tested the air filtration system in each Jefferson Parish Public School worksite to ensure maximum protection for students and employees.
The teachers' union also says their teachers have over 100 questions concerning PPE and cleaning, classroom regulations, procedures for dealing with sick student/teacher and physical education classes.
