Jump in COVID cases in Louisiana, decrease in hospital patients

The Louisiana Department of Health today reported more than 3,600 new cases of coronavirus in the state.  Officials, however, say that nearly half of them are the result of a backlog of old tests.

"LDH reports a total of 3,614 cases reported to the state since 8/3/20. This includes a backlog of 1,741 cases with specimen collection dates as far back as 5/28," the state explained.

That would mean that 1,873 of the cases are new.  That is still a larger increase in positive test results than we have seen the past few days.

The number of COVID-19 deaths increased by 27 today in Louisiana.

The net number of coronavirus hospitalizations in Louisiana decreased by nine.
