LSU defensive lineman Nelson Jenkins is opting out of the 2020 season, Tigers head coach Ed Orgeron confirmed Tuesday morning.
“As far as I know, he told us he was opting out,” Oregeron said. “He’s not with he football team right now, I haven’t had contact with Nelson in at least two weeks,”
The 6-foot-4, 300-pound sophomore redshirted last season after playing in one game as a true freshman in 2018. Jenkins joins receiver Ja’Marr Chase, cornerback Kary Vincent Jr. and defensive lineman Tyler Shelvin as players from last season’s national championship team who’ve decided to opt out.
Defensive lineman Neil Farrell had also opted out, but Orgeron said the 6-foot-4, 319-pound lineman, who posted had 46 tackles including seven for loss to go along with three sacks in 2019, is set to return to the team.
“His grandma was sick and he wanted to make sure she was taken care of so he’s back and we welcome him back,” Orgeron said.
Orgeron also address reports that defensive lineman Tyler Shelvin is considering returning to the team.
“We here rumblings,” Orgeron said. “His family has called me and I know people are talking to him. I have not spoken to Tyler. I think some of his teammates are talking to him but there has not been a decision yet .
“Only time it’d be a decision is to call me and we’d take him back. Obviously, we want him back. I don’t know where he’s at, in his mind. If he doesn’t want to come back, we wish him the best. If he wants to come back, like any member of our family, we’ll take him back.
