New Orleans' murderous May

By WWL

Despite some encouraging numbers on murders in New Orleans so far this year, you can't look to the month of May for any comfort. So says Criminologist Dr. Peter Scharf who has been looking at the numbers, including an extremely violent holiday weekend.

''You can't get comforted because May was a murderous month,''  Scharf said.

Scharf says what hurts is that despite the hard efforts by the police chief, the progress is slipping.

''We had, by my count, 42 shootings in May," said Scharf. "That equals the highest total in the last five years."

Scharf adds you cant have a weekend like this and then say this is a safe city or that murder is under control.

According to Scharf, the shooters and the victims usually know each other, so it's not just random violence.
