The New Orleans Recreation Development (NORD) Commission and the Mystic Krewe of Nyx joined City officials, on Sunday to celebrate the grand opening of a new inclusive Mid-City playground.
“Sunday was filled with excitement, emotion and pure joy for the children of New Orleans,” said Nyx Captain and Founder Julie Lea. “Providing a playground for everyone to enjoy in Mid-City, then in other neighborhoods, is so rewarding. The community response has been tremendous.”
The new playground which was funded by Nyx, is located along the Lafitte Greenway at Conti Street and North Jefferson Davis Parkway. They are designed to provide a safe place for children of all abilities to play together, with equipment that accommodates wheelchairs and other special needs. It will be managed by NORD and is the first of three playgrounds to be donated by the all-female krewe.
“We believe that this new inclusive playground is perfectly aligned with NORD’s motto: Something for Everyone,” said NORD CEO Larry Barabino, Jr. “The playground is in a perfect Mid-City location. We hope that all of our residents, with or without special needs, take advantage of this new community play spot. I look forward to continuing our partnership with the Krewe of Nyx to build similar playgrounds in both Algiers and New Orleans East.”
