Pelicans forward Zion Williamson will not play in the Pelicans Friday night matchup with the Washington Wizards, which is the second half of a back-to-back.
Williamson was listed on the team's official injury report with the designation rest. Williamson scored 24 points in Thursday afternoon's loss to the Kings. The Pelicans have been closely monitoring the rookie's playing time after he missed much of the ramp up while dealing with a family emergency. His minutes had steadily increasing throughout the team's seeding games, after playing just 15 minutes in the team's NBA bubble opener.
"He has not played in back-to-backs during the season really either, and that's the same thing here," Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry said. "We just thought it would be best right now to do it this way, and we'll evaluate tomorrow and see what's going on."
J.J. Redick will start in place of Williamson along with Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, Jrue Holliday and Derrick Favors.
"We'll start JJ," Gentry said. "We'll start a small lineup so that we can still have some size coming off the bench."
The Pelicans and Wizards tip off at 7 p.m.
