Here we go again - back to the argument over a mascot and a chant for a sports team. In “Woketopia,” if a few are offended by the representation, then the only acceptable remedial action available must be abolition.
The most recent victim reveals itself in the Atlanta Braves. A St. Louis Cardinals pitcher who is also a Cherokee nation member complains that the Braves’ chant is demeaning to Native Americans. It seems to me the motivation and intent of the Braves organization is to draw upon the bravery, honor, strength and resilience… and most importantly…the warrior spirit exhibited by Native Americans then and now, not to mention pride in the tribe. What horrible values to mimic, exploit or whatever in marketing the professional baseball team.
The Braves organization states, “We will continue to evaluate how we activate elements of our brand, as well as the overall in-game experience.” Okay, now I’m offended. If that doesn’t sound like a sound bite politician, I don’t know what does.
But wait… it gets worse. “We look forward to continued dialogue with those in the Native American community after this post season concludes.”
No you don’t… tell the truth. After the 13-1 thrashing that ends your season, you may want to focus on who the chants are for…or it may be a perfect time to whine together!
