LISTEN: Sean Payton says records don’t matter against Atlanta

7-1 has the Saints sitting in 2nd place in the NFC, just behind the last unbeaten team in the 8-0 San Francisco 49ers. The Black & Gold are coming off a bye to begin the 3rd quarter of the season against their 1st of four straight NFC South foes.

This Sunday seems like a gimme with the 1-7 Falcons limping into the Superdome, but how often do we see this match-up come down to a final possession? Since 1993, 31 games between these teams has been decided by a touchdown or less.

“Having played them as many times as we have, and knowing each time you know how these games have finished, it really hasn't mattered, you know, the records heading into the game,” explained Saints head coach Sean Payton

“I think that they've been in some hard fought games and they've had some injuries. Our league can be like that where, all of a sudden after five or six weeks you can look back at 4 of those games or 3 of those games where they easily could have won.”

Luckily, the Saints have found ways to win in the face of adversity. Coach Payton wants to push his team even more coming off their break.

“I think we need to be better in certain areas,” Payton said.  “Offensively relative to what we're trying to accomplish, by scheme. So it's more specific, it's not just, let's run the ball better, but, how we can find more explosive plays in the running game and in the passing game. Defensively, how can we take the ball away more efficiently? You know, we've had five interceptions that were called back via a penalty or one was a penalty on the offense for delay a game.”

As stellar as the Saints defense has been, they have totaled just 9 takeaways so far. Their offense has done a great job of protecting the football though and the team is a +3 in the giveaway/takeaway ratio.

New Orleans Saints 7-1Drew Brees missed 5 games.Alvin Kamara missed 2 games.Michael Thomas 73 catches for 875 yards in 8 games.Saints defense kept teams under 250 yards last 5 games.Resilient. They just keep winning. #WhoDat
