Saints' Sean Payton on mask fine: 'I've just got to be more diligent with it'

Sean Payton was among several coaches to be fined by the NFL this week for improperly wearing a face covering on the sideline during Week 2’s games.

The New Orleans Saints coach said he’s just going to have to be more diligent about wearing a face covering during games moving forward.

“Look I just got to do a better job when we are not on offense, you know,” Payton said. “It’s OK if your pulling it down while you’re calling plays but what happens is I get caught up in the game and half the time forget that it’s down. So I've just got to be more diligent with it.”

The NFL reportedly fined Payton along with Jon Gruden, Vic Fangio, Pete Carroll and Kyle Shanahan $100,000 each in addition a $250,000 fine for each team.

Payton said coaches will have to “remind ourselves to” properly wear masks and face coverings during the games.

“Maybe you chase the type of mask you’re wearing because it’s easier, I think, if you have the gaiter on, that it sits around your neck,” Payton said. “But look like anything else we’ll find a way to be more diligent with it.”
