Is it road rage? A psychotic break? Schizophrenia?
The only thing that is known is a man from Long Island, New York is suspected of doing a lot of physical damage to cars and attacking people in four New Orleans neighborhoods, including the French Quarter.
One victim told WWL-TV about a series of encounters with the allegedly unstable man.
He says Joseph Cupolo “used racial slurs. He used curse words. And he told me he was going to take the bat, and beat the ‘whatever’ out of me, and then kill me.”
In an incident on Royal Street, Cupolo is accused of doing over $3,000 damage to the victim’s pick up truck, smashing out windows and bashing the body repeatedly.
In another part of the Quarter, Cupolo reportedly attacked a jogger, hitting him with the bat a number of times.
Finally about three hours after the attack on the jogger a compliant Cupolo was taken into custody while sitting on his car, a badly damaged BMW, in the Bywater.
After the arrest an NOPD police report stated, “In plain view in the back of the front seat was a green aluminum baseball bat. It should be noted that Mr. Cupolo has been captured on surveillance cameras committing multiple crimes through the following neighborhoods: Bywater, Marigny and French Quarter.”
Cupolo is jailed on one count each of aggravated battery and criminal damage to property. It is not known if bail had been set.
“If they wouldn't have caught him, who says he wouldn't have done it again,” the French Quarter victim said.
