Jefferson Parish considers opt-in for bar reopenings

The Jefferson Parish Council holds a special meeting this afternoon to vote on an opt-in for bar reopening.

Bars can reopen in Louisiana in Phase 3 of easing coronavirus restrictions, but first, parish leaders must "opt-in," and only if a parish has had fewer than five percent of tests come back positive for two weeks.

Jefferson Parish meets that criteria, according to council member Deano Bonano, and he says getting bars reopened is critical for business. But with a limit of 25 percent of maximum occupancy, he worries it will not be enough.

"It's going to be difficult," said Bonano. "I'm fearful some bars may never recover."

Bonano says the council will also consider urging the governor to raise the limit on how many patrons bars can host at one time.

The Jefferson Council meets this afternoon at 2:30.
