The Jefferson Parish Council voted unanimously this afternoon to opt-in for bar reopening.

Bars can reopen in Louisiana in Phase 3 of easing coronavirus restrictions, but first, parish leaders must "opt-in," and only if a parish has had fewer than five percent of tests come back positive for two weeks. State health officials have to certify those numbers before bars can reopen.

"I think it is important that bars now join the economy," said Councilmember Jennifer Can Vrancken.

Councilman Scott Walker said he believes the earliest bars would be able to reopen would be Wednesday.

Council members also approved a resolution asking the governor to give parishes a say over what a bar's hours of operation can be. Under Gov. John Bel Edwards' Phase 3 order, bars must close at 11 p.m.
