New Orleans City Councilman Jay Banks says 20 people he knew have died from COVID-19, and he does not want any more of his friends to die -- so Mardi Gras parades are out.
"I love Mardi Gras, but I hate funerals," Banks said in an interview with WWL-TV. "There is no way we can conceivably do that safely."
Banks said no parades doesn't mean no Mardi Gras.
""We're going to do something; we don't know what that something is," said Banks. He also raised the possibility that parades could roll during another time of year, after vaccines have been approved and distributed to enough people to make large gatherings safe.
"There is light at the end of the tunnel," he said, "this is just a very long tunnel."
