50-50 chance of tropical development in northwestern Caribbean

An area of low pressure in the northwestern Caribbean has a 50 percent chance of developing into a tropical depression or storm over the next five days.

"A broad area of low pressure is expected to form over the western Caribbean Sea in a few days," said National Hurricane Center forecaster Eric Blake. "Environmental conditions are forecast to be conducive for some development thereafter, and a tropical depression could form late this week or this weekend while the system moves slowly west-northwestward over the northwestern Caribbean Sea."

While there is virtually no chance of development in the next couple of days, the hurricane center puts its chances of development at three to five days at 50 percent.
