CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Chicago man is facing charges for allegedly stealing city of Chicago manhole covers.
Police say they found 52-year-old Lashawn Powell driving on Thanksgiving morning with 31 of the sewer lids in the back of his pickup truck.
CWB Chicago reports Powell allegedly admitted stealing the covers, weighing about 250 pounds each, and selling them to a friend who then sells them for scrap.
The city values the lids at $460 each. There is also the potential danger of having someone fall into an open sewer.
