(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The leaders in charge of high school athletics in Illinois now say they expect student athletes to stay idle until at least next year because of restrictions tied to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Illinois High School Association’s board of directors decided Wednesday that as long as the state is in “Tier 3” mitigations, it has no expectation of resuming even low-risk winter sports earlier than January.

But the IHSA board is considering moving a spring sport — girls’ badminton — to winter if the state eases restrictions in time.

The board is also leaving it up to local school officials to decide if it’s safe for students and members of their communities to use weight rooms and open gyms, provided those facilities comply with state guidelines.

The IHSA meets again Dec. 14 and could make further adjustments.
