It’s been a busy year for Brad Pitt.

The actor made a strong showing at the box office, with leading roles in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and the sci-fi thriller “Ad Astra.”

But the Hollywood heartthrob’s most challenging part of the year wasn’t stuntman or astronaut. Off screen, Pitt grappled with his role as Angelina Jolie’s ex-husband.

Brangelina’s done, but the former married stars and parents to six children still had plenty to sort through this year.

For Brad Pitt’s birthday (and to aid the delicate mending process), check out all the times Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie talked about each other in 2019.

Brad Pitt got a new tattoo next to his Angelina Jolie ink

In an action that spoke volumes, Pitt revealed a new tattoo, which he got next to some ink he already had dedicated to Jolie. The new piece depicted a tall man standing over his shadow and was next to one he previously got in honor of his wedding to Angelina Jolie in 2014.

Brad said he 'was running to avoid tough feelings' when discussing past drinking and his divorce

Brad’s been doing some soul searching in recent months. Back in September, the actor discussed his difficult divorce and past drinking. “What I realized is that I was running to avoid tough feelings, painful feelings,” Pitt said. “I just didn't know how to deal with them. Anything I found that I used for escape. Those kinds of em... those kinds of difficult feelings, I don't know how better to describe it. It can be anything, drugs, booze, Netflix, snacks. Anything. I don't want at this point to be running from anything.”

Angelina said she was 'feeling broken' before playing Maleficent

Angelina’s been doing some soul searching of her own. Angelina didn’t name Pitt by name, but the subtext was clear when Angelina said she was “feeling broken” before agree to take on the role of Maleficent again. “It was a tough time,” she said in October. “I’d been coming off a few years of difficulty, and I was not feeling very strong. In fact, I was feeling pretty broken. It took me a moment to feel the strength of [Maleficent] again.” Jolie filed for divorce from Pitt in 2016.

They couldn’t agree who gets the French winery they own together

Even as recently as October, the former couple was still hammering out details of their multi-million dollar divorce. One particular sticking point: who gets the French château and winery they bought together in 2011.

Angelina said Brad is preventing her and the kids from living abroad

Sometimes the divorce disagreements can take on a global magnitude. In November, Angelina spoke candidly about her high-profile divorce from Brad, saying that she wishes to live overseas but is unable because the distance between the kids and their father would not be ideal. "I would love to live abroad and will do so as soon as my children are 18," she said. "Right now I’m having to base where their father chooses to live."

Brad Pitt said his kids made him cry for the first time in 20 years

Even when you split, the kids bring everything into focus. Throughout their divorce, both Brad and Angelina have turned continually to their six children. Pitt’s kids with his ex-wife helped him get in touch with his feelings (even despite his son Maddox discussing his strained relationship with his father). In a conversation with Anthony Hopkins, Pitt said, “I hadn’t cried in, like, 20 years, and now I find myself, at this latter stage, much more moved — moved by my kids, moved by friends, moved by the news. Just moved. I think it’s a good sign. I don’t know where it’s going, but I think it’s a good sign."
